Rooney salutes evergreen Giggs

Wayne Rooney was full of praise for Ryan Giggs, after the veteran winger provided two goals and scored another in United's 4-1 win at Fratton Park.

The Welshman, who turned 36 on Sunday, was at his influential best against Avram Grant's side and, although Rooney's hat-trick hogged the headlines, it was the contribution of Giggs which had the England international purring.

"He's amazing," Rooney told MUTV. "His energy, his workrate, his passing and his movement are unbelievable. It's a privilege to play with him.

"He plays more like a 26-year-old; he's up and down, he's everywhere. It's great for him to get his 100th Premier League goal. I didn't know (about the record) until after the game, but I'm delighted for him."

Rooney also took time out to praise the man on the opposite flank; Antonio Valencia, who gave Portsmouth a torrid time and continued his rapid assimilation to the United style of play.

"I think he's settling in more and he's looking much more of a threat now," said Rooney. "He's scored a few goals in recent weeks, he's big, strong, quick and if he keeps improving the way he is, he'll be a real threat for us throughout the season."

Barcelona forward Lionel Messi has been named the European Footballer of the Year.

The Argentinean won the prestigious Ballon d'Or by a record margin from last year's winner Cristiano Ronaldo.

Messi, 22, becomes the sixth Barcelona player to take the award but the first for four years - since Brazilian playmaker Ronaldinho.

The Argentinian won an unprecedented treble last season as the Catalan side won the UEFA Champions League, the Liga title and the Copa del Rey.

Messi was the top scorer in last year's Champions League with nine goals, including a header in the 2-0 final defeat of Manchester United in Rome.

The talented playmaker knew he was a serious contender to win the coveted prize, but did not expect to pip his rivals by such a wide margin.
Favourites

"Honestly, I knew that I was among the favourites because Barcelona had a fruitful year in 2009," he told French Football magazine.

"But I didn't expect to win with such a margin. The Golden Ball is very important to me.

"All the players who won it were great players, and some great players never won it."

Barca teammates were also hailed with midfielder Xavi taking third place with 170 points while Iniesta was fourth on 149.

In fifth place was Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o, who left Barca to join Inter Milan. He was Barca's other scorer in the 2-0 final win over United.

The highest ranked Premier League star was Manchester United's Wayne Rooney, who finished in eighth place. He was closely followed by Chelsea's Didier Drogba and Liverpool's Steven Gerrard.

A late header from Paul Scholes handed Manchester United a 1-0 win over Besiktas in Istanbul to give them a winning start in the Champions League.

The first hour of the match was an evenly matched affair as the well organised hosts stifled United with the full backing of their vociferous home support.

But the Red Devils made substitutions and a tactical change as the game began to open up in the closing stages and Scholes pounced with a header on 77 minutes after Hakan Arikan had parried Nani’s shot – a perfect response after his sending off against Tottenham Hotspur last weekend.

As a result Wolfsburg and United lead the way in Group B after the first match-day, with CSKA Moscow and the Turkish champions getting off to losing starts.

Besiktas' key men, striker Nihat Kahveci and experienced goalkeeper Rustu Recber were only fit enough for the substitutes' bench.

Former Manchester United striker Andrew Cole has backed Wayne Rooney to score "25-30 goals" this season.

Cole, himself having scored 121 goals in 275 appearances for United, felt that Rooney was keen to step up in the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo and prove his class.

"Rooney has started the season really well. He's ready to step into Ronaldo's shoes. His attitude is 'I'm top, and I'm going to prove it'. He's the man to get 25-30 goals this season," Cole said, according to United’s official website.
The ex-England ace also urged fans to be patient with Dimitar Berbatov, after the Bulgarian endured a mixed first season. Cole acknowledged that the high expectations that greeted Berbatov have yet to be met, but emphasised the importance of the stylish forward’s contributions.

"It's not easy coming to United in your first season," he added. "The spotlight is on you straight away and everyone expected Berbatov to get 30 goals last year.
"I don't think he's that type of player, but he brings something different to the team. He's so elegant.”

Cole was also looking forward to seeing new signing Michael Owen make an impact.

He continued: “Then there's Michael Owen. There aren't many natural finishers around. Sir Alex told me that if he keeps Owen fit he'll get goals."

The Red Devils are planning to make their star striker one of England's highest earners...

Manchester United are making ready to offer Wayne Rooney a bumper new contract, the News of the World claims.

The England forward, who netted twice in his club's 5-0 rout of Wigan Athletic on Saturday to pass 100 United goals, still has three years remaining on his current deal.

He presently rakes in around £105,000 per week, but the powers that be at Old Trafford feel that Rooney deserves to match it with the highly paid stars of the Premier League's nouveau riche outfits.

Chelsea stalwarts John Terry and Frank Lampard and the Manchester City trio of Carloz Tevez, Emmanuel Adebayor and Robinho are each said to earn upwards of £150,000 per week.

And United are more than willing to reward the Scouse star who many believe must be the one to fill Cristiano Ronaldo's empty boots if Sir Alex Ferguson's men are to challenge for honours this term.

It is unlikely that any movement will be made on this deal until Rooney's agent, Paul Stretford, completes his FA ban.

New Chelsea boss Carlo Ancelotti experienced his first match at Wembley and in English football, but he has plenty of recent practice in facing Sir Alex Ferguson. The Red Devils are apparently plotting one lust hurrah in the summer market...

According to the News of the World, Manchester United have set their sights on Valencia's sought-after playmaker, David Silva.

The Spanish international's future has been a source of great speculation all summer long, with clubs all over Europe thought to have inquired after the player.

Given Los Che's well-documented financial troubles, it is widely believed that they will have to sell either David Villa or Silva to balance the books - and with the former now certain to stay, the odds have shortened on the latter leaving.

Nevertheless, Valencia recently declared that the 23-year-old midfielder will not be sold, and although Sir Alex Ferguson has hinted that his transfer business is done, sections of the British press would have it that Silva could move to Old Trafford by the end of August.

United will host the Mestalla club in a pre-season glamour friendly this coming Wednesday, and it is claimed that the Premier League champions will use the opportunity to register an interest in Silva.

NOTW reports that the Red Devils will have to stump up at least €29 million to have any hope of signing the player, who is also coveted by Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez.

Argentine International Carlos Tevez has completed his move to Manchester City.

The former Manchester United striker has been the subject of a protracted transfer tussle since the end of last season.

The deal was officially completed after the 25-year-old has signed a five-year-deal at Eastlands after finally passing a medical.

Manchester City have been favourites to secure the premanent signing of the striker after he ruled out extending his two-year stay at Manchester United.

Manchester United legend Bryan Robson seemed to believe there was only one reason to choose City over United as he told Sky Sports, "I'm a bit surprised, but at certain stages money talks, and for me, Tevez has looked at the money side rather than his playing career side."

The Eastlands outfit fought Chelsea for the signature after the former Boca Juniors man revealed he would not move to Liverpool out of respect for United and their fans.

According to the News of the World, Arsenal are set to announce their interest in the highly sought-after Olympique Lyonnais striker, Karim Benzema.

The 21-year-old is currently in the midst of a tug-of-war between Manchester United and Real Madrid, with Lyon and the player's agent admitting that both super-clubs are genuinely interested.

It is thought that it will take upwards of €30 million to prise Benzema away from the Stade Gerland, a sum that would usually rule a team of the Gunners' nature out of the bidding altogether.

However, recent reports suggest that the London side are seriously considering offers for Emmanuel Adebayor, as Milan have declared that they are chasing the Togolese forward.

Berbatov was born in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria. His father, Ivan, was a professional footballer with local outfit Pirin Blagoevgrad, and his mother, Margarita, was a professional handball player. As a youngster, Berbatov supported A.C. Milan and modelled himself on Marco van Basten until Euro '96 in England, when the then fifteen year old discovered a new role model in Alan Shearer, formerly of Newcastle United, even sleeping in a Newcastle shirt. His mother later spoke of Dimitar's dream of playing for Newcastle one day. Berbatov learned the English language by watching the "Godfather" films. Cech, who was on the losing end of the Champions League final penalty shootout against Edwin van der Sar and Manchester United, nevertheless pipped the Dutchman to the award for his superb performances on the way to and even during the final.

"Of course it was difficult, because it was up to me and five players who were chosen to shoot, but you have to concentrate on yourself and this is what I try to do," explained the goalkeeper, recalling that dramatic, rain-soaked shootout in Moscow.

"For me persnally, it's an amazing achievement to get this award this evening," he said. "To be a great defender you need a lot of attributes; to read the game very well, be quick, strong, good in the air, and you also need good team-mates around you, which I have bundles of, so I'm happy."

The winners finally picked up an award, and it of course went to Cristiano Ronaldo, for best forward. The secret to his success? "Work. I think Manchester had a great season and I scored many goals.

"I feel very proud because my position is winger and to win the best forward is good for me, it gives me ambition to work good and better. Thank you everyone who voted for me, thank you to my team-mates, and good night."

And of the four separate winners, it was Ronaldo who won the overall award for best player. "To win this award is great for me," said the Portuguese ace. "I feel very proud, very good, to win this, because the Champions League is one of the best. Every player likes to play this competition and to be the best."

He won all major titles this season including Premiership, Champions League and made himself as Top Scorer in both competition. Ronaldo also won the 2008 English PFA Player of the Year and FWA Footballer of the Year, which is a back to back victories for him on both awards. With all of those achievements, there is no doubt for me that he will win the FIFA World Player of the Year award.

Wayne Rooney questioned by police after alleged spitting incident

Wayne Rooney has been questioned by police after allegedly spitting at a photographer, according to the Metropolitan Police.

The Manchester United and England forward was interviewed under caution after the incident near London's Oxford Street on Tuesday evening. The 22-year-old was reportedly leaving a restaurant with his new wife Coleen.

He was spoken to by police at a neutral venue after a third party made the complaint shortly afterwards. In law, deliberately spitting at someone is an offence of common assault.

A report is expected to be sent to the Crown Prosecution Service who will decide on whether to bring charges.

"At 12.10am on Wednesday we received a third party allegation that a photographer had been spat at by an individual outside a restaurant in Hanway Street, W1," a police spokesman said.

"Officers established the incident occurred at approximately 10.20pm on Tuesday evening. The alleged suspect, a 22-year-old male, was spoken to by police.

"He was not arrested and did not attend a police station. Inquiries continue."

Real Madrid retain Cristiano Ronaldo hope

Ramon Calderon, the Real Madrid president, has not given up hope of signing Cristiano Ronaldo this summer, and says he is biding his time while Manchester United and the player resolve their "argument".

Ronaldo has made no secret of his desire to join Real Madrid and even likened his situation at Old Trafford to that of a slave in a recent television interview after suggesting that United were holding him against his wishes.

Sir Alex Ferguson has continually criticised Real's pursuit of the player and United have even reported the matter to Fifa however, Calderon insists his club are little more than spectators.

"Look, this is a problem that wasn't created by Real Madrid," he said. "Madrid are just spectators in this soap opera. At the moment Manchester United and the player are in an argument and Madrid are waiting...and we can't do any more for the time being.

"Obviously, it's clear that we want Cristiano with the quality that he has. But there is a contractual problem that United and the player have to resolve, not us.

"Will he persuade the club to let him go? I can't say that. That question's for the player, who has publicly said his dream is to play for Madrid.

"We hear those words with pride and satisfaction, but his departure doesn't only depend on Cristiano. United are the ones that have to sort it out and it will either happen or not."

"I would like to remind everyone that Madrid didn't generate this expectation but the player himself. The club has been respectful. We didn't blow this all up. The club at which I'm president sleeps with a clear conscience."

Ronaldo, who is recovering from ankle surgery, is yet to return to Manchester, but Calderon believes when he finally does it could force a resolution.

"It could happen then, but it's true that we have to wait developments," he said. "Everyone's thinking so much about this matter that people can get confused and I understand that they're fed up.

"They (United and Ronaldo) will talk next week and if after this conversation United decide to sell him, then of course Madrid will be there."

Some reports have suggested Real would be forced to sell Robinho to accomodate the Portugal international, however, Calderon insists both players can play in the same team.

"The coaches believe they (Ronaldo and Robinho) are compatible and Madrid don't need to raise funds to buy," he said. "To sign Cristiano we don't need to sell anyone and even less so Robinho. It's not like that at all.

"I don't have any reason to think that Robinho is unhappy. Schuster adores him, his team-mates want him and last year he was very happy at the Bernabeu.

"If he wasn't happy and wanted to leave we wouldn't fight to change his mind. But I don't think that's the case. It's absurd to plan someone's transfer if they're happy and I firmly believe that."

But then, he is also everything Lampard is not. Superb creativity, a great eye for the game, and an ability to run the show that has seen him win the Champions League with two different clubs. Finally, Chelsea have a player who can orchestrate the pleasing football their owner wants. With Ballack and Essien set to play around him, it will be an ominous midfield.

Jose Mourinho does not quite promote exciting football, but he does like a fast, aggressive winger forward at least on one flank. That is just what he has found in Mancini, who will be handed the license to thrill just as Arjen Robben was during the glory years at Chelsea. Tends to blow hot and cold, though, as Roma found out last season. Lack of consistency will not go down well with the 'Special One', so he does need to focus a lot more.

7. Amauri (Palermo to Juventus)
Last Week: 5

The Brazilian-Italian striker made it to number three after earning himself a long overdue move to a top four club, but now slips down to seven. He has already shown his potential with Palermo, and the prospect of him getting some top quality service from the Juve midfield is simply mouth-watering. Champions League, here he comes.

6. Daniel Alves (Sevilla to Barcelona)
Last Week: 4

Chelsea, Real Madrid, Liverpool, Manchester United – these are just some of the clubs that have queued up for him over the last 18 months or so. However, it is Barcelona who land him after some difficult negotiations with Sevilla. Perhaps a touch overpriced at 30 million euros (he would have been number one on this list at 20m), but then again, he is the best attacking full-back this world has seen since Roberto Carlos.

5. Samir Nasri (Marseille to Arsenal)
Last Week: 3

The highly rated French international is the latest to join the clan of young Gunners. Many view him as a replacement for Aliaksandr Hleb, while others go a step further and call him the next Zidane. He has had some problems with injuries, but let's hope those were exceptions as opposed to the rule. The prodigous playmaker is at number five.

4. Ronaldinho (Barcelona to Milan)

A gamble? Yes. But given the chance, would you sign one of the all time greats of football for a third of his market price last summer? You bet you would. At 28, he is far from over. Some diet planning and some tough training, and he will give at least three or four good years to the Rossoneri. A gamble nonetheless, or he would definitely have been number one. Number four for the Gaucho.

3. Luka Modric (Dinamo Zagreb to Tottenham)

The hottest young Croatian was snapped up by Spurs despite the interest of clubs such as Barcelona and Chelsea, and what a signing it has already turned out to be. Looks set to become the jewel in Juande Ramos' midfield next season. He remains at the sharp end of our list.

A very shrewd buy, and what could very well turn out to be a stroke of genius from Barcelona. With Lionel Messi expected to run the show, what they needed was not a Ronaldinho, but a tireless, no-nosense attacking midfielder to offer support from the other flank - without hogging possession or the limelight. And they got him on the cheap too. A true critics' player in that while fans rave about others, he runs away with the technical plaudits.

But foot injuries are far from the most intriguing of Ronaldo’s revelations, as the two-time PFA Player of the Year has gone public with his desire to sign for Real Madrid this summer.

The Red Devils are aghast at the prospect of losing their prize player and have refused to give to los Merengues’ approaches thus far, despite a potential transfer fee of over ₤70million.

As such, the want-away winger will miss a few familiar and rather important faces when he arrives at Carrington for treatment this week as the big boys at Old Trafford attempt to delay discussions as long as possible.

Sir Alex Ferguson and chief executive David Gill are currently on their summer holidays and will not cut short their breaks, meaning both Ronaldo and Madrid will have to wait until the beginning of July before any form of negotiation can commence.

Cristiano Ronaldo inspired Portugal to victory over the Czech Republic and then claimed his country have a real shot at glory at the European Championships.

Success at Euro 2008 would cap off an incredible season for Ronaldo at club and national level, and Portugal along with Holland, Germany and Spain look to be the competition's strongest contenders.

After seeing off the Czechs 3-1 with goals from Deco, Ronaldo and Ricardo Quaresma, Portugal are now through to the quarter finals and a step closer to exorcising the demons of 2004, when they lost the final on home soil to unfancied Greece.

"Our main aim was to get to the next phase," said Ronaldo. "I'm very happy to have helped my team-mates to win.

"We played well in the first match and again in this match. If we carry on like this, we have a good chance."

Portugal showed resilience having taken an early lead only to be pegged back to 1-1 by the Czechs.

Edwin van der Sar and Holland got off to a flying start in Euro 2008 Group C with a comprehensive 3-0 win over world champions Italy.

It was a classy attacking display from the Dutch, who Italy found difficult to cope with.

Former Reds striker Ruud van Nistelrooy gave the Oranje a fortunate lead when he turned in a close-range finish on 26 minutes, the match officials failing to spot he was clearly offside.

Italy had every reason to feel hard done by, but there could be no complaints about Wesley Sneijder's strike five minutes later. A rapid counter attack cut mercilessly through the Italian defence and ended with an expert volleyed finish from Sneijder.

Van der Sar was called upon late on to produce stunning saves from Fabio Grosso and Andrea Pirlo before Giovanni van Bronckhorst headed in Holland's third after 80 minutes.

The result puts Marco van Basten's men top of Group C, above Patrice Evra's France and unfancied Romania, who played out a 0-0 bore draw in the group's other opening clash.

Evra didn't play in the match as he was kept out by Barcelona left-back Eric Abidal.

It was a poor display from the French, who are unlikely to progress to the knockout stages if they continue to produce such abject performances in their remaining matches against Holland and Italy.

United's official statement read: "Manchester United is delighted to announce it has agreed terms with Cardiff City for the transfer of Aaron Ramsey subject to terms being agreed and the player passing a medical." However, Cardiff have also given permission for another Premier League team, expected either to be Liverpool or Arsenal, to talk to the teenager.

Manchester United are taking advantage of the managerial speculation over Mark Hughes' future at Blackburn to prepare a £15 million bid for striker Roque Santa Cruz. However, reports suggest that Hughes will attempt to take Cruz with him to his next club, be it Chelsea or Man City.

Micah Richards, and Sevilla's Brazilian duo Luis Fabiano and Daniel Alves are heading the list of players that Sir Alex Ferguson is keen to sign, apparently within two weeks. The Scot has a reputed £50 million to fund summer transfers.

Alves is seen as a replacement for Gerard Pique while Fabiano has been designated as United's top summer target. Ferguson will be looking to broaden his attacking options this summer, especially after losing patience with Louis Saha. Fabiano, who has scored 33 goals for Seville in La Liga this season, is eclipsing names such as Dimitar Berbatov as United's first choice summer buy. The 27-year-old has a contract valuation of £46.8 million but, more realistically, United could expect to sign him for a quarter of that price. I've listed a few players who can make the United squad deadlier and strong. These are not impossible transfer targets and Fergie would not regret these signings.

1) According to me they will have to sign a centre half, who can provide a cover in case of any injury to the existing duo of Ferdinand and Vidic. For me, the perfect signing would be Joleon Lescott from Everton as he is young and sharp both in defense and attack.

2) Secondly, what United need is a dynamic midfielder. Some may question why because we have the best midfield in the world. Well the reason is the age factor. Scholes & Giggs will last only for one or two years and then they shall hang their boots. That's why United need one midfielder who could create something on his own. The perfect signing would be Diego From Werder Bremen because he is very talented and his creativity is marvellous. He could form a great partnership with Anderson.

3) The third signing should be a player who can play on the left wing because other than Giggs I don’t think there is anyone who can slot into that role. The perfect signing would be Gareth Bale as he has tremendous pace.

4) Also I think adding one young striker to the squad would be fantastic. The perfect one would be Sergio Aguero from Atletico Madrid.

MOSCOW — A domestic rivalry splashed over international borders on Wednesday when England’s two best soccer clubs took their tenacious battle to the banks of the Moscow River to play for Europe’s most coveted athletic prize.

Amid thickening rain and an unbreakable 1-1 tie, the game came down to a penalty-kick shootout. After an unfortunate slip by the Chelsea captain John Terry sent his potential winning kick off the post, Manchester United goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar blocked a shot by Nicolas Anelka, giving United the championship. A deafening chorus of English fans sent shudders through Luzhniki Stadium.

This first all-English final in Champions League history became an extension of a season-long battle in England’s Premier League, where United won the title on the season’s final day.

After a lethargic beginning to Wednesday’s game, the clubs seemed to find their footing on the newly installed turf. Cristiano Ronaldo, United’s dazzling Portuguese wing, struck first, rocketing a header past goalkeeper Peter Cech. After Chelsea’s Frank Lampard redirected a bumbling deflection for the tying goal shortly before halftime, the clubs battled through the second half, then two overtimes, pummeling each other’s goalkeepers, even as fatigue caused tempers to flare and injuries to mount.

Manchester United’s win, its third European title, dashed Chelsea’s hopes of a first, relegating it to a now customary position as runner-up.

“It’s very hard to lose in penalties,” Avram Grant, Chelsea’s coach, said with a scowl and his typical reticence. “We hit the posts, we hit the bar, yet we dominated the game.”

The loss ended a 21-game streak without a loss for the Blues, and could prove devastating amid persistent rumors that team stars like Didier Drogba, who spent much of the night in the periphery and became only the second player ejected from a final, may move elsewhere for next season.

Grant’s position may also be in jeopardy. The team’s billionaire Russian owner, Roman Abramovich, could seek a manager who will give him more of a return on his billion-dollar investment.

For United, the match was laced with emotion, coming during the year of the 50th anniversary of the 1958 Munich air crash that killed eight of the team’s players as they returned from a European Cup game.

The young players who survived the crash formed the core of the team that won the title a decade later for Coach Matt Busby.

“We won’t live the memory of the Busby Babes down,” said Sir Alex Ferguson, United’s coach. “I feel proud.”

This season’s game was the third Champions League final between clubs from the same country in less than a decade. Spain’s Real Madrid defeated Valencia in 2000, and A.C. Milan beat Juventus in an all-Italian final in 2003.

A multicultural mélange took the field Wednesday in the stadium where, last October, Russia defeated England, effectively evicting the visitors from Euro 2008 qualifying.

Russia won another victory last night, proving itself a worthy host for major international competitions and further allaying lingering doubts about its competence to hold the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, a Black Sea resort. There were fears that a perpetual diplomatic spat with England might spill from the political arena to the soccer stadium, overshadowing the championship contest.

The Kremlin, however, bit its tongue. Keen to raise their country’s athletic profile, Russian officials greased an often unwieldy bureaucracy to squeeze some 40,000 beer-loving English fans through a typically tight border, waiving visa requirements for ticket holders and providing a fleet of nearly 1,000 buses and shuttles to ferry fans between the stadium and Moscow’s three airports.

The hospitality seemed to pay dividends. Although there were some scattered reports of fighting among fans, prematch warnings about rioting and bloodshed proved hollow.

Instead, a bellowing chorus echoed from the subway’s depths to the gates of the stadium as fans clad in Chelsea blue and United red joined Russians in bursts of song and cheers.

“I’ve been a fan of Manchester for more than six years,” Anya Shetinina, a 19-year-old Muscovite, said as she photographed the singing Englishmen. “It’s great that this is happening in our city.”

Surely, Manchester United-Barcelona is a footballing extravaganza that no football crazy would like to miss. It is hence, not an understatement nor an offense to the remaining teams (Chelsea and Liverpool), when people say this match is as good as a final.

Both United and Barcelona play this beautiful game the way it ought to be played, with the flair attacking style. Both teams consist of the finest footballing talents in the world.

No wonder footballing pundits are sitting on the fence on this one. They are abstaining from making any predictions because the match is truly very tight to call.

Both Barca and Manchester United are undefeated in this season's Champions League.

So what is the difference between these two teams?

At Nou camp, Barcelona must be careful enough not to concede while scoring a few themselves. It is imperative though that Barca don't go gung-ho trying to kill the tie in the first leg itself.

United are deadly fast on the counter and the tie can slip away from the hosts before they know it!

The one thing that is sure to make a difference in this tie is the defense. United have a clear advantage here and with Vidic back it is hard to see them conceding lots of goals.

Also, United are more organized than Barca. And with the attacking flair that United boasts, the Barca defense will surely be tested.

Another factor that comes into play is the Ronaldo-Messi battle.

Both are breathtaking talents. But here again, since Messi is returning from injury, Ronaldo might come away victorious from this little battle. One remembers how Gatusso played him out last year in the semis, but Yaya Toure is no Gatusso.

On the other hand one sees Hargreaves and Evra fully equipped to handle Messi.

With Ronaldinho out and Messi coming back from injury the onus falls on Henry and Eto'o to inspire Barca. Even though they are not in their best form, their quality cannot be undermined and it is here that Barca can edge out United.

Even though Rooney+Tevez might match Henry+Eto'o on paper, the latter are more conventional forwards and more prolific and proven goal scorers. Also one wonders whether Sir Alex will play a 4-4-2 rather than his favored 4-5-1.

With all these factors taken into account one might say that United have a slight advantage going into this tie.

But football is never played on paper, especially with so much talent gracing one field, nothing can be certain.

For the first leg, I see United getting at least one away goal and not conceding more than one themselves. It's a tough call, but such games don't come often and neither does the chance to predict their scorelines.

I'll never move abroad, says red-hot Rooney

But United's win over Lyon on Tuesday and Arsenal's stunning triumph in Milan have clearly got Rooney thinking about the prospects of English clubs meeting in the last eight of the Champions League — and perhaps beyond.

He added: 'It'd be nice if the English teams could stay apart in the Champions League and go further. It would be a shame if we drew each other.'

United were not at their scintillating best as they disposed of Lyon on the back of a 1-1 away draw and victory by a solitary Ronaldo goal at Old Trafford.

But Rooney echoed the sentiments of his manager Sir Alex Ferguson when he suggested United have the strength in depth to reach the final.

'We've brought good players in so the squad is bigger and we haven't got many serious injury problems at the moment,' said Rooney.

'The likes of Anderson and Nani have come in and been brilliant but the main thing is we're enjoying our football.

'That's a big reason why we're going well in three competitions.

'But if we want to win the Champions League we'll have to improve on our performance against Lyon. We got a bit edgy in the second half, a bit nervous.

'We're looking for better performances. But we do have a lot of match-winners now. At the end of last season we had a lot of injuries and a few tired players. But this is a big squad and, hopefully, the rotation policy will help.

'If we get to the last four again we'll be a lot fresher because a lot of the players won't have played as many games as they did last season.'

Such are the attacking options now available to Ferguson that even Rooney occasionally has to do a stint on the bench as he did for the 3-0 Premier League win at Fulham last weekend.

Rooney hates missing out and would rather play every game but admitted yesterday that the arrival of players like Carlos Tevez has helped him raise his own levels.

The Portuguese star, who famously winked when helping get United team-mate Wayne Rooney sent off in the last World Cup, is 11/2 with Betfred to score exactly 33 league goals, which would surpass Viollet's club record set in 1959-60, and 12/1 to end the season with 34, which would equal the Premier League record held by Andrew Cole in the 1993-94 season and Alan Shearer in the following season. However both Cole's and Shearer's goalscoring feats were achieved over a season of 42 games instead of the current 38.

Ronaldo remains an outsider though to score 35 or more Premier league goals this season and is a 25/1 shot to hit those heights with Betfred.

Chester-born goalkeeper Tom Heaton has been decorated at youth and Reserve level for United, but is yet to make his first team bow.

An excellent shot stopper and always in full command of his penalty area, Tom is a reliable solid goalkeeper who has always shown great promise.

Heaton is also an excellent outfield player, having played as a goalkeeper and midfielder during his time at Wrexham before signing professionally at Old Trafford on 8 July 2002. Tom quickly set about ascending through the club's ranks - notching 22 appearances for Francisco Filho's Under-17s side as they came second in

their league.

Tom's debut season was capped by an FA Youth Cup winner's medal, although he was an unused substitute throughout the entire campaign with Luke Steele preferred in goal.

The 2003/04 season brought a similar climax, with Heaton on the bench as United romped to the Manchester Senior Cup final against Manchester City. Although he didn't appear in the win at Old Trafford, Tom had still made great progress throughout the season, notching 14 Under-19s appearances and eight Reserve starts.

Heaton stepped off the periphery of the second string during the 2004/05 season, however, and was first choice goalkeeper as Ricky Sbragia's side won the Quadruple. The demands of two leagues, two cup competitions and a play-off were huge, and Heaton made 36 appearances as United clinched everything except the Manchester Senior Cup.

The 2005/06 season saw Tom's progress somewhat impeded as loan spells at Swindon and Antwerp failed to yield the desired amount of action, and the 2006/07 campaign saw him back as the Reserves' first choice goalkeeper.

Heaton continued to perform solidly throughout the season as Brian McClair and Jim Ryan's side narrowly missed

out on a third successive FAPRL North title and were beaten in the final of the Manchester Senior Cup.

There was also the bonus of several unexpected brushes with first team involvement. Injuries to Edwin van der Sar and Tomasz Kuszczak saw Tom promoted to the senior substitute bench on eight occasions, although he was never called into action.

The position of young goalkeeper is one that requires much patience, a virtue that Heaton continues to display admirably.

Match-winning striker, full-back, midfielder, even goalkeeper – United’s utility player has done it all.

A shining example of selflessness and professionalism, John O’Shea has been ever-willing in his service of United. Whether coming on from the bench or in the starting line-up, he is ready for the fight from the second his boots touch the turf.

In his first full season, 2002/03, O’Shea was an absolute revelation at left-back: galumphing up and down the wing, effortlessly picking the pockets of opponents who ran at him, cheekily nutmegging those who tried to stop him – most notably Luis Figo –

he was one of the star men as United regained the Premiership.

Sadly, as so often happens with young stars in their second season, O’Shea’s gradient levelled off throughout 2003/04. And when United bought Gaby Heinze in the summer of 2004, he had to look to other positions than left-back for regular action. Thankfully, O’Shea has the tools to play pretty much anywhere. He was always a footballing defender, blessed with beautiful balance, crisp passing and formidable upper-body strength, and that enabled him to slip into midfield as well as anywhere across the back four.

In 2004/05 he played in all those positions, and in the following season he began to establish himself in the holding role in midfield – forming an unlikely but extremely effective partnership with Ryan Giggs that was the basis of United’s late-season surge. The Irish international continued where he'd left off at the start of the 2006/07 campaign, but soon saw his chances limited by the burgeoning midfield partnership between Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick.

He still went on to make 49 appearances (including a cameo between the posts at White Hart Lane when Edwin van der Sar suffered a broken nose) and chipped in with five goals, the most

memorable of which came at Anfield in March 2007. Pepe Reina could only parry Cristiano Ronaldo's injury-time free kick and the ball fell to substitute O'Shea who coolly swept it home in front of the Kop to the delight of United fans everywhere.

He netted another crucial strike at Goodison Park a month later, stabbing home the Reds' first goal after Iain Turner had spilled Ryan Giggs' corner. United, of course, went on to seal a thrilling 4-2 victory and eventually their ninth Premiership title. O'Shea signed a three year contract extension in November 2007 which will keep him at the club until June 2012.

Dong Fangzhuo had to be patient to become the first ever Chinese player at Old Trafford. Having joined United in January 2004, he finally made his senior Reds debut in May 2007 against Chelsea.

He spent two years on loan at Royal Antwerp until he was eligible to play in England. In his first season in Belgium, he was the league's top scorer with 17 goals, and scored 35 goals in 61 games during his time at Antwerp.

There is often confusion over the spelling of his name. His surname is Dong, first name Fangzhuo, which is often spelt incorrectly as Fangzhou. In China, the family name (in this

case Dong) comes first, which often causes confusion in countries and cultures where family names appear last.

Dong pulled on the red shirt for the first time in a friendly against Hong Kong XI in July 2005 and scored in the 2-0 win. The following summer he got the winning goal in a 1-0 win over Kaizer Chiefs during the 2006 pre-season tour of South Africa.

After much ado and a great deal of waiting from the striker, he can now concentrate on becoming a regular member of the United first team squad.

Gerard Piqué arrived at United in the summer of 2004 with great promise and potential. Highly-regarded at his former hometown club Barcelona where he was nominated as the Catalonia Player of the Year, Piqué opted to relocate to Old Trafford in search of first team chances.

United’s coaches were so impressed with the way Piqué settled in that he was handed an earlier-than-expected senior debut as a substitute for John O’Shea during the Reds’ Carling Cup trip to Crewe. Piqué's 23-minute cameo in the 3-0 victory came barely a week after his first appearance for the Reserves. He looked instantly at ease alongside Wes Brown

in the centre of defence, twice snuffing out the threat of then-Crewe striker Dean Ashton.

He made two further first team outings during the 2004/05 campaign, as a sub for Brown in the Reds' 3-0 Champions League defeat away at Fenerbahce and as a starter in the goalless FA Cup stalemate against Exeter at Old Trafford. Piqué won yet more silverware in his second season at Old Trafford as he helped the Reserves claim the Treble. He was a regular fixture in Rene Meulensteen’s side, playing 26 times and firing two goals.

The Spanish defender made his Premiership debut at the Stadium of Light in October 2005 as United ran out 3-1 winners over Sunderland. He featured in six more league and Cup matches during the remainder of the 2005/06 season including an impressive display at right-back in his first Premiership start against West Ham at OT in March 2006.

With so many senior contenders vying for a regular berth in the Reds' defence, Sir Alex Ferguson decided to send Pique on loan for the entire 2006/07 campaign. He joined Real Zaragoza in La Liga and although opportunities weren't

immediately forthcoming, Gerard soon had an impact on the first team and became a regular starter.

Although he scored on his debut at Villarreal and again against Gimnastic and hometown club Barcelona, it was Pique's impressive defensive displays which caught the eye as Zaragoza finished a superb season with a UEFA Cup slot.

Such was Pique's impact at La Romareda that the Spaniards enquired about a permanent transfer for the youngster. However, Sir Alex Ferguson sees his future at United.

You must have a rare and special football talent to impress the great Bobby Charlton. The United legend sums up Paul Scholes perfectly: "He’s always so in control and pinpoint accurate with his passing – a beautiful player to watch."

Part of the new wave of talent that ushered in Beckham, Giggs, Butt and the Neville brothers in the mid-1990s, Salford-born Scholes scored twice on his debut in the League Cup at Port Vale in 1994/95 – and on his first league outing against Ipswich – and hasn't looked back.

A host of golden seasons at Old Trafford include 1995/96’s Double-winning campaign, in which

he covered admirably during Eric Cantona’s suspension, finishing second behind the Frenchman in the scoring charts with 14 goals; he was a cornerstone of 1999’s Treble-winners, although suspension ruled him out of the Champions League final, and in United’s Premiership success in 2003, his 20-goal haul was vital.

Personal highlights included his opener in the 2-0 win over Liverpool in October 2006 and a volley of the highest calibre in the 3-0 win at Aston Villa two months later, which earned him the Goal of the Season Award at the club's Player Awards ceremony.

His contribution was recognised by players and press alike - he finished third in the PFA Player of the Year category and fourth in the Football Writers' vote - both of which were won by team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo.

Now in the top seven highest ever appearance makers and the top twelve highest goalscorers at the club, Scholes is, indisputably, one of the finest talents in United's history.

Highly rated Portuguese winger Luís Carlos Almeida da Cunha ("Nani") will aim to emulate the achievements of compatriot Cristiano Ronaldo when he starts his Old Trafford career in earnest.

Nani officially joined United in July 2007 for an undisclosed fee from Sporting Lisbon after being tracked for some time by Sir Alex Ferguson and his scouting staff.

After making his Sporting Lisbon debut at the age of 18, Nani featured 29 times in the league for Sporting in 2006-07, scoring five times. During his time at Sporting he also featured in the Champions League before winning the 2007 Portuguese Cup.

He played for Portugal during the European Under 21 Championship in Holland during the 2007 close season. The Cape Verde Islands born player also earned five caps for the senior side prior to his move to United, scoring on his debut against Denmark in September 2006.

Primarily a left sided player, Nani can also play in numerous other attacking positions.

There are obvious similarities between Ronaldo and Nani. And Nani is tipped to match the standards of 2006-07's PFA Player of the Year.

"He (Nani) is an amazing player, he's an amazing kid as well, he works very hard and has got a big heart," said Portuguese Under 21 team mate Ricardo Vaz Te. "He got a gift from god which is his talent obviously."

Portugal assistant coach Paulo Sousa is another who is backing Nani to be successful in England. "Nani is very explosive and very strong. He's fast and is going to be a great signing for United," he said. "I think that in the next five or 10 years, he and Cristiano Ronaldo can become the best players in the world."

Nani's move to Old Trafford undoubtedly had something to do with assistant boss Carlos Queiroz. Quieroz is credited with

helping Ronaldo settle and improve his game, and he is expected to help out Nani too.

Ronaldo has also promised to help Nani. “I really hope he has the same success as me, or even more, because he’s got the ability to do this," he said. "He’s joining the right club to evolve as a player and as a person.”

Nani is also famed in Portugal for a trademark goal celebration. His back flips graced the pages of the Portuguese tabloids while at Sporting, and United fans will be looking forward to seeing such celebrations many times during the coming seasons.

With outstanding vision, quick feet and a broad-ranging repertoire of passes, Michael Carrick proved in his first season at United to be an ideal partner for Paul Scholes, albeit a very different one to the previous number 16, Roy Keane.

Contrary to the usual central midfield blend of crafter and grafter, Carrick and Scholes' playmaking talents were key to the free-flowing football which won a ninth Premiership title for United.

It was the first major honour of Carrick’s professional career, although he did win the FA Youth Cup with West Ham in 1999, scoring twice in the 9-0 final

demolition of Coventry City.

West Ham loaned Carrick out to Swindon in 1999/2000 and then Birmingham in 2000/01 when he earned a nomination for the PFA Young Player of the Year, eventually won by Liverpool's Steven Gerrard.

Carrick spent much of the 2002/03 season sidelined with injury. West Ham were relegated at the end of it but rather than join Joe Cole, Fredi Kanoute and Jermain Defoe in an exodus, Carrick stayed for a season in the Championship. However, after losing the 2004 play-off final to Crystal Palace, Carrick decided he couldn't wait another year for a return to the Premiership and moved across London to join Tottenham Hotspur in a transfer worth £2.75million.

He blossomed into an accomplished midfielder in two seasons at White Hart Lane. However, he only scored two goals in 64 games and it seemed this low strike-rate would continue at United, at least for the first few months following his £14million transfer (this fee could eventually rise to £18.6million).

Encouraged by Sir Alex Ferguson to push forward, Carrick eventually weighed in with six strikes from midfield in 2006/07. His first was a well-taken half-volley against Aston Villa at Old Trafford on 13 January 2007;

his second, at home to Reading in the FA Cup, was shortlisted for the club's Goal of the Season award (won by Scholes away to Villa). His other goals included two against Roma in the fairytale 7-1 win.

Carrick's role in a title-winning midfield should help his international ambitions, as he competes with Owen Hargreaves, Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard for a place in England's starting XI. He's been there and done it at the highest level, earning praise for his holding role against Ecuador during the 2006 World Cup.

Nemanja Vidic is a beast of a defender. Tall, athletic and solid as a rock, he's uncompromising in the tackle and formidable in the air. His partnership with Rio Ferdinand during the 2006/07 season drew comparisons to great United pairings like Steve Bruce and Gary Pallister.

Vidic began his career with his boyhood club, Red Star Belgrade, when he joined their youth programme at the age of 14. His first-team debut didn't arrive until 2001 but he went on to make 22 appearances in his first season. His leadership qualities quickly saw him handed the captain's armband. After three successful years as

skipper – he scored 12 times in 67 matches – he ended his stay with Red Star on a high by leading them to Serbia's domestic league and cup double. He made the switch to Russian outfit Spartak Moscow in August 2004 and soon became a regular starter. Just 39 games and four goals later, United came calling.

The Reds announced his signing on Christmas Day, 2005. He hadn't played for two months as the Russian season had recently ended, so it took some time for his true ability to shine. But after completing an intensive training programme, Vida began to show his class. A training ground injury while on World Cup duty with Serbia & Montenegro ruled Vidic out of the tournament and United's first six games of the 2006/07 season. But when he did take his place alongside Rio Ferdinand in the heart of the defence, he gelled immediately and soon began to pose an attacking threat from set pieces. Vidic scored three league goals on the way to clinching his first Premiership medal and also notched a crucial equaliser on Champions League Matchday 6 against Benfica at Old Trafford.

A collar-bone injury sustained at the end of March kept Vidic out of the bulk of United's

title run-in, but his performances until that point had been strong enough to help the Reds to the top of the league... and inspire a rousing song of his own among the matchgoing faithful.

His form was also acknowledged with a spot in the PFA Premier League Team of the Year.

Though his first title-winning campaign ended six weeks prematurely due to cartilage problems, Ji-Sung Park’s departure from the Premiership stage in 2006/07 was typical of his efforts in a Red shirt thus far.

It was the industrious South Korean’s tap-in, his fifth league goal of the campaign (from just eight starts), that virtually secured the points against Blackburn at Old Trafford, another pivotal moment in a season chock-full of them. It followed a succession of lung-bursting efforts across United’s midfield, whether as a first-choice or as substitute, that have made him something of a cult hero since his arrival from

PSV in the summer of 2005.

Born in Seoul, raised in Suwon just outside South Korea’s capital, Park left school at 18 to join Japanese side Kyoto Purple Sanga. His potential to make the leap from Asia to Europe was spotted by Guus Hiddink, who coached the South Korea during their successful run to the World Cup semi finals in 2002. Later that year, Park followed Hiddink to PSV.

Jiearned widespread recognition in 2005 after scoring against Milan in the Champions League semi finals, but he had gradually been building his reputation in Holland. Park played only a fleeting part in PSV’s title success in his first season in Holland. Two years later he had fully adapted to European football and was an integral component of the side that clinched Holland's League and Cup Double.

Alerted to his blossoming talent, Sir Alex had Park watched more than 20 times before finally signing him for an undisclosed fee, believed to be £4 million, in June 2005. Having already proved his ability in Europe, acclimatising to the Premiership was Park’s initial test. He rose to the challenge, playing all but four of United’s Premiership matches in 2005/06. He scored his first goal for the club with a fine strike in the 3-1 away win

over Birmingham in December 2005, and claimed his first medal in the Carling Cup final win in February.

Ben Foster's arrival at Old Trafford was a whirlwind affair. The gifted goalkeeper was on loan at Wrexham when he caught the eye of Sir Alex Ferguson in the Football League Trophy final.

In Cardiff to watch his son Darren in action, the Gaffer noted Foster's fine performance, who kept a clean sheet as Wrexham won 2-0 after extra time.

Foster was scouted in the following three months, before being prised away from Stoke City - without ever playing for the Potters' first team - for an undisclosed fee in July 2005. He's never been one to stay in a place too long, with five loan spells in three

years at the Britannia Stadium, and that precedent continued after his move to Old Trafford.

After just one and a half pre-season friendlies for United's Reserves, Ben was farmed out to Watford on a season-long loan. Although tipped by many for relegation, the Hornets had a stunning campaign - thanks in no small part to Foster's performances.

Aidy Boothroyd's side returned to the Premiership after beating Leeds in the final of the Championship Play-offs. For the second year in a row Foster kept a clean sheet at the Millennium Stadium as Watford won 3-0.
Foster was a shock call-up to the standby list for England's 2006 World Cup squad. Although Ben's presence wasn't required in Germany, his international bow wasn't long in coming as a superb second loan season at Watford earned him a start - ironically at Old Trafford - in England's friendly with Spain in February 2007.

Steve McClaren's side lost 1-0, but Foster's noteworthy display was in keeping with his fine form throughout his season at Vicarage Road. Although he couldn't prevent the Hornets' relegation, Foster emerged as one of the great young hopes for both United and England.

Ryan Giggs is the club’s most decorated player with 18 major honours, yet he might never have graced Old Trafford had it not been for Sir Alex Ferguson’s intervention.

Cardiff-born Giggs was attending Manchester City's School of Excellence in his early teens, but Sir Alex made a personal visit to his house on his 14th birthday and Ryan jumped at the chance to sign for his boyhood club.

He turned professional at United in November 1990. He made his League debut in the old Division One against Everton at Old Trafford on 2 March 1991 as a substitute for Denis Irwin. The following season his first

League start proved a memorable occasion, scoring his first ever United goal (albeit via a deflection) in a 1-0 win over Manchester City.

Injury to Lee Sharpe enabled Giggs to pin down a regular place at the start of the 1991/92 campaign, thanks to his mesmerising dribbling skills and blistering pace. His first trophy arrived in April 1992 as United beat Nottingham Forest in the League Cup final, and the following season saw Giggs claim the first of his record nine Premiership winners’ medals.

His impressive trophy haul also contains European Cup, European Super Cup and Inter-Continental Cup winners’ medals, while he has played a part in four of Sir Alex Ferguson's five FA Cup triumphs. The prestigious cup competition will forever be synonymous with the Reds winger after his superb solo effort in the semi-final replay against Arsenal at Villa Park in April 1999.

Ryan celebrated 10 years at Old Trafford with a testimonial match against Celtic in 2001/02. A year later he bagged his 100th career goal in the 2-2 draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge and became only the second ever player to play 700 games for United when he helped the Reds to a dramatic 1-0 win over Liverpool at Anfield in March 2007. The

club's all-time appearance record holder is Sir Bobby Charlton (759) and Giggs is well on the way to surpassing that figure.

The Welsh captain played an integral role in United's 2006/07 title-winning season and was lauded by players and pundits alike. It was a record ninth triumph for Giggs and it edged him ahead of previous record holder Alan Hansen, who scooped eight titles during his Liverpool days.

Having retired from international football in June 2007 with 64 caps and 12 goals, Giggs was promptly honoured again - this time with an OBE as he was included in the Queen's Birthday Honours List for his services to football. The United winger signed a contract extension in October 2007 which will keep him at the club until at least June 2009.

Touchline ban for Sir Alex

The FA have handed Sir Alex Ferguson a two-match touchline ban and a £5,000 fine for his outburst towards referee Mark Clattenburg.

The United manager will have to watch the Reds' matches against West Ham and Birmingham City from the stands as a result of the ruling.

Sir Alex had earlier admitted the charge for comments he made to Clattenburg at half-time during United's defeat at Bolton last month.

A statement from the FA read: "At a Regulatory Commission hearing yesterday, Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was given a two-match touchline ban, starting on Friday 28 December. He was also fined £5,000.

"As he did not request a personal hearing, the case was dealt with on the basis of written statements and video footage."

Scholesy on schedule

Paul Scholes' recovery from a knee operation is on schedule and, according to Sir Alex Ferguson, the midfielder will be able to resume full training in six weeks.

The veteran star has been out of action since suffering cartilage damage ahead of United's Champions League trip to face Dynamo Kyiv.

"He went to see the specialist last week," revealed Sir Alex. "He's going to start straightforward running next week.

"All being well, he'll be back in full training with us in six weeks' time."

If Sir Alex's timeline proves accurate, Scholes could be available for selection when Portsmouth visit Old Trafford on Wednesday, 30 January.

Wayne Rooney is a player in a hurry. He burst onto the Old Trafford stage in September 2004, just as he had burst into the Premiership with Everton, and has become arguably United’s most important player.

Much was expected of the England’s 18-year-old hero of Euro 2004 when he swapped Everton, his boyhood club, for the Reds in August of that year. Yet becoming the world’s most expensive teenager - £20m rising to a possible £30m – did little to phase him.

In his very first game at Old Trafford he produced a stunning display, putting behind him the frustrations of a metatarsal injury, to blast an

unforgettable debut hat-trick past a shell-shocked Fenerbahce.

It was a fairytale start to his United career and very much a sign of what was to follow. By the end of the 2004/05 campaign he’d amassed 17 goals in 43 appearances. Sadly he missed out on his first winners medal – United losing on penalties to Arsenal in the FA Cup final – but was rightly named PFA Young Player of the Year.

Rooney’s second season at Old Trafford saw him again take huge strides, justifying his billing as one of the world’s most exciting young talents. He netted the Reds first goal of the season against Debreceni and ended the season with 19 goals in 48 matches. It was a contribution that saw him named both Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year by fans and PFA Young Player of the year (again) by his fellow professionals.

The young striker openly endeavours to better his goals tally each season, and the 2006/07 campaign saw Rooney achieve his aim with 23 strikes as he shook off a difficult World Cup with England.

Rooney's red card during England's quarter-final defeat to Portugal caused a media storm in Britain, not least because of the involvement of United team-mate Cristiano Ronaldo, but Wayne rose above

the controversy to register another excellent year at United.

A long goalscoring drought was emphatically ended with a stunning hat-trick at Bolton, while doubts over his ability to find the net in Europe were well and truly banished as he netted four goals in the Champions League latter stages; home and away against Roma and a brace at Old Trafford against AC Milan.

The development of the man Sir Alex describes as “the best young player I have seen in my time” continues at a rate which causes either exhilaration or consternation, depending on who you support.

The celebratory champagne quaffed after clinching the Premiership title probably had a bitter-sweet taste for United’s French international striker, who experienced yet another Old Trafford season that swung from high to low.

In fact, so regularly has his trajectory switched direction since he signed in January 2004 in a £12.85 million deal from Fulham, the graph of Saha’s time at United career almost resembles a footballing version of snakes and ladders.

The 2006/07 season started with great promise – carrying on exactly where he’d left off last term (when he bagged 14 goals in 30 starts).

Goals against Fulham and Charlton Athletic early on in the Premiership – as well as a crucial Champions League strike against Benfica in Lisbon set the tone and he was absent from the starting line-up in just six of United’s games before the festive period. His exemplary form drew praise from the boss, who highlighted both his pace and bravery. “When he puts all the parts of his game together he is an excellent player, and now he is on a great goalscoring run as well,” said Sir Alex.

However, despite other notable achievements – highlights included November’s strike against Blackburn Rovers at Ewood Park which proved the only goal of the game and an extremely nifty finish against Chelsea in the 1-1 draw at Old Trafford – Saha’s fortunes changed after Christmas. A succession of niggling injuries put paid to a regular run in the side, and he was forced to sit out the final nine matches of the season, making his swansong in March’s victory over Liverpool at Anfield.

He remains something of an enigma at Old Trafford – a player of undoubted potential who has yet to really fulfil it. The man himself, who scored on his Reds' debut against Southampton in January 2004, remains as confident as you would expect a graduate of France’s fabled

Clairfontaine Academy to be. “I’ve got so much pent-up energy I want to get out of my system,” he avers. “I feel like I’ve got something to prove again.”

Let’s hope he’s fit and raring to achieve that as the defence of our crown begins in earnest in August.

Dubbed the new Ronaldinho, Brazilian wonder kid Anderson completed his move to Old Trafford in July 2007.

There is a striking resemblance between Anderson and international superstar Ronaldinho, not only in terms of looks. Like Barcelona's attacking wizard, Anderson is incredibly skilful and his array of talent will surely dazzle the Premiership.

Both Anderson and Ronaldinho started their careers at Gremio in Brazil. Anderson (or Anderson Luis de Abreu Oliveira to give his full name) joined the Porto Alegre club at the age of just five.

He made his first

appearance for Gremio in 2004, aged just 16 but with his club side in the Brazilian second tier it was internationally where Anderson made his name.

He shone with Brazil at the 2005 South American U-17 Championship and 2005 U-17 World Cup, winning the Adidas Golden Ball for most valuable player.

An Anderson wonder goal for Gremio against Nautico in November 2005 earned a 1-0 win and promotion back to the top flight. That goal and his impressive showing for Brazil's young side persuaded FC Porto to sign Anderson in January 2006.

He continued his promising displays at Porto. He won many honours including the Portuguese Championship in 2005/06 and 2006/07, although his progress was hampered by a broken leg causing him to miss much of last season.

Sir Alex Ferguson and his right hand man Carlos Queiroz were clearly impressed and fought off interest from Barcelona to get their man. Anderson will battle with fellow new signing Nani, Ronaldo and Ryan Giggs for a place in the starting line-up. His favourite position is wide left but he has also featured in central midfield.

On the international front, Anderson earned his first call up to the

Brazilian senior squad in the summer of 2007 and featured in the team’s Copa America campaign.

Anderson has already earned many plaudits, none more so than from Mario Zagallo, the World Cup-winning player and manager.

"Everything suggests he is going to be a superstar, a prodigy, as he has undisputable quality," he said.

If Anderson lives up to the expectations, Premiership and European defenders will be having many sleepless nights working out ways to deal with his trickery.

Cristiano Ronaldo has just about exhausted all superlatives, except to say that having developed and matured from a young and inexperienced winger when he joined from Sporting Lisbon in 2003, he's now among the best and most dynamic attacking forces in the world.

Signed as a largely unknown 18-year-old for £12.24m, the story goes that Sir Alex was persuaded to sign him by his players on the plane home from a pre-season friendly against Sporting that summer. In truth, the boss had long been aware of his ability. The urgency to sign him stemmed from interest from other top European clubs. This was a target Sir Alex simply

couldn’t let slip through the net.

Ronaldo wasted little time in showing off his sublime skills with a stunning 30-minute debut against Bolton at Old Trafford in August 2003. After 39 appearances and eight goals – including the opener in the FA Cup final win over Millwall – he was named the Sir Matt Busby Player of the Year for 2003/04. His second season never quite lived up to his first. But some late season form saw him end the 2004/05 campaign with nine goals in 50 appearances. In 2005/06 Ronny again reserved his best form for the latter half of the season, a clear sign that, despite his undoubted talent, this was a player still honing his talent.
Then came the 2006 World Cup finals in Germany, a truly defining moment. In the quarter finals against England, Cristiano was blamed for Wayne Rooney’s sending off, the scapegoat for England’s exit. Some wondered if he would even return to Manchester. But Sir Alex’s calming words assured him. After all, it’d happened before with Eric Cantona in 1995 and David Beckham in 1998. The best players respond to adversity, and he did just that.

United’s title success was undoubtedly a team effort, but one player was central to almost every major plotline. It began with the barnstorming

5-1 win over Fulham – Ronaldo and Rooney running the show and very publicly rubbishing claims the two were at odds. Dazzling wing-play was backed with regular assists and crucial goals, including seven in five games over Christmas and then a last-gasp winner against Fulham in February.

After a career so blighted by injury, it’s amazing that Wes Brown has managed to develop into such an outstanding defender.

Two cases of damaged knee ligaments and a broken ankle have hampered the defender to the extent that he only passed the 200-appearance mark in January 2006, eight years after making his debut. However, the sporadic nature of his first-team outings have not masked his class. Tough-tackling, strong in the air and fast on the deck, Wes is exceptionally talented.

A local lad, born in Longsight, Brown signed as a trainee in July 1996, putting pen to paper on professional forms

four months later. In his first full season he picked up the Denzil Haroun Young Player of the Year award. His promise earned a senior debut against Leeds United on 4 May 1998, and a first start against Barnsley a week later.

His performances in 1998/99 caught the eye, but knee-ligament injuries ahead of the 1999/00 season and at the end of the 2002/03 campaign were bookends to a broken ankle in August 2002. Many players might have been demoralised by such wretched luck, but Brown’s grit saw him return in September 2003 and complete the rest of the 2003/04 season. In 2005/06 he finally became a linchpin in the centre of defence; his no-nonsense style perfectly complimenting Rio Ferdinand’s more languid approach, and providing a solid platform for United's backline. Brown's form looked set to catapult him back onto the international scene for the World Cup in Germany, but despite his fine form though, Wes was omitted from England’s squad.

The 2006/07 campaign – with Nemanja Vidic imperious alongside Ferdinand at the heart of the Reds’ rearguard – meant opportunities were limited in Wes’ preferred central position, but as ever, he has not rocked the boat, taking his chances and taking them well when they have arisen. An England recall duly

came for the 5-0 win over Andorra in September.

As the season came to a climax, Wes passed the 250-appearance mark in all competitions and claimed his fourth Premiership winners' medal. His Reds' contract runs until 2008 and he’s in no rush to look elsewhere. "I would love to see out my career with United," he told United Review in February. "I’m a Manchester lad and Old Trafford is still the only place for me." That’s good news for fans of the man Sir Alex called the "most naturally gifted defender in England."

Armed with elegance, pace and an incredible reading of the game, Rio Ferdinand is undoubtedly one of the finest defenders in world football.

The Peckham-born star burst onto the Premiership scene with West Ham United under the guidance of Harry Redknapp before being snapped up by Leeds United for £18million in November 2000.

The 2002 World Cup provided Rio with the stage to make the transformation from budding talent to accomplished defender, and his performances in Japan convinced Sir Alex Ferguson to part with a massive £30million.

Although

initially hampered by injury and loss of form, Rio found his feet towards the end of his first season, as United came back from the dead to overtake Arsenal and win their fifteenth League title.

In September 2003 disaster struck. The defender missed a routine drugs test and, despite appealing, was banned from football for 8 months in January 2004.

Since returning from his suspension, Rio has consistently justified his tag as a world-class defender. He also rediscovered his goal touch, most dramatically with an injury-time winner against Liverpool in January 2006.

In his own words, it was “possibly the longest-running transfer saga” in football. But after a several months of prolonged pursuit, United finally signed Owen Hargreaves from Bayern Munich in May 2007.

The Canadian-born, England international midfielder’s stock has risen dramatically in the past year. During the World Cup, one newspaper reported that he was “a shock £7million target” for Sir Alex. His eventual fee was closer to £17million when the transfer finally went through, and Hargreaves had become one of European football’s most highly-thought of defensive midfielders.

Born and raised in

Calgary, Canada, where his parents moved from England in the early eighties, Owen left for Germany aged 16 to join Bayern Munich.

After earning his stripes in their youth ranks, a 19-year-old Hargreaves made the step up to first-team football in August 2000 in what was a highly successful season as Bayern claimed the Bundesliga title and Champions League crown. In the semi final against Real Madrid Hargreaves showed he could hold his own against Madrid's "galacticos", and remains one of only two English players to win the European Cup with a non-English club - the other being Steve McManaman.
The following season saw Hargreaves establish himself as a regular and key member of Bayern's first-team and witnessed his breakthrough at international level. Hargreaves was eligible for any one of the home nations, as well as Canada, and, had he delayed his decision, Germany under residency rules. He plumped for England, and after several impressive Under-21 displays, he was called into the senior squad in 2001.

Initially a squad player, it took until the 2006 World Cup in Germany for Hargreaves to truly be seen as a key man. In fact, he was booed in their opening match of the tournament, but went on to be named Man of

the Match in the quarter final defeat to Portugal and was voted England Player of the Year in January 2007.

Not only will Hargreaves add another dimension to United’s midfield with his determined, energetic and enthusiastic style, the 26-year-old also has vast experience. A Champions League winner in 2001 and four-time Bundesliga champion with Bayern, Hargreaves has also experienced two World Cups and a European Championships with England. Partnering Paul Scholes or Michael Carrick – or indeed both – gives a well-balanced feel to United’s engine room.

United beat off fierce competition from Liverpool, Arsenal and Inter Milan to secure the services of French full-back Patrice Evra on 10 January 2006.

The defender's arrival, just days after Nemanja Vidic’s capture, signalled Sir Alex Ferguson's intention to shore up his defence, which had suffered in the long-term absence of Gabriel Heinze.

Although only 24 when he joined the Reds, Evra had already been capped five times for France. He had been club captain at Monaco, where he established himself as a quick, committed, attack-minded player, also capable of playing at left-midfield.

Evra started his career in Italy after a scout from Masala spotted him in Les Ulis, the same tough suburb of Paris where Thierry Henry grew up. After one season in Serie C1, he moved up to Serie B by joining Monza. In 2000, Nice brought him home to France and converted him from left-winger to left-back. After two seasons he was snapped up by Monaco.

He again had little trouble adjusting to the bigger stage; he was a French League Cup winner in 2003. He then helped Monaco to the 2004 UEFA Champions League Final before losing 3-0 to Porto.

Patrice cites his first manager at Monaco, Didier Deschamps, as a big influence on his career, saying he “transmitted to me the bug of winning at any price.”

After a mixed start to life at United, having joined midway through a difficult season, Patrice showed his best form throughout the 2006/07 season as the Reds recovered the Premiership title.

The French defender's extra gym time paid off as he came to terms with the physical demands of playing in England, and he notched his first Premiership and Champions League goals against Everton and Roma respectively.

Evra's superb form was

tempered by niggling injuries, but his part in United's successful season was recognised by a slot in the 2006/07 PFA Team of the Season, as voted by his Premiership peers.

Gary Neville belongs to an elite group of players who have skippered the Reds to the Premiership title.

Following on from Bryan Robson, Steve Bruce, Eric Cantona and Roy Keane, Neville realised a lifelong dream as he became the fifth United captain to lift the Premiership trophy following the Reds' record ninth triumph at the end of the 2006/07 campaign.

But if he wasn’t able to influence matters on the pitch, you can be sure his presence was felt in the dressing rooms and from the stands. No-one, but no-one, wants United to win more than Gary Neville.

The defender, who has made over 500 appearances in a United shirt, was handed the armband during the 2005/06 season following Roy Keane’s departure. Being one of United’s most consistent and committed performers since establishing himself in the side in 1994/95, Neville was a natural choice. He enters every game refusing to contemplate defeat. The fans love him for it. His heart on his sleeve approach doesn't endear him to everyone, however – notably the football authorities. His badge-clenching celebration following Rio Ferdinand’s last-minute winner against Liverpool at Old Trafford in January 2006 saw him charged with improper conduct by the FA and fined £5000.

“Are you meant to smile sweetly and jog back to the halfway line?” he said. "People want footballers to be whiter than white. Do they want a game of robots?"

There was no such censure for Gary’s next high-profile

celebration – at the 2006 Carling Cup Final. He lifted his first trophy as captain and collected the one domestic medal that had eluded him in his career. The Reds had not won the competition since April 1992, when Gary was in the famous youth team that also spawned David Beckham, Nicky Butt, Ryan Giggs and Paul Scholes.

Vocal and determined, he gives his all in every game, demanding the same from his team-mates. No excuses.

The No.1 slot at United has had its fair share of pretenders since Peter Schmeichel vacated his throne in 1999, but the willowy Dutchman has easily come closest to filling the great Dane’s sizeable gloves.

Although the two differ in style – Schmeichel was, of course, famed for furiously bellowing at his back four as well as his brilliant saves - Edwin’s experience and calm assurance has undoubtedly been a key component in regaining the Premiership crown from Chelsea in his second season at the club.

Twelve clean sheets in the league in what became, towards the end of the season, an ever-changing

back four, is an impressive feat. It saw him make the 2007 Premiership Team of the Year, as voted for by his fellow professionals. Most notably among them was Chelsea stopper Petr Cech, who expressed deep admiration for the former Ajax and Fulham keeper’s performances in 2006/07.

His late penalty save from Darius Vassell against Manchester City at Eastlands was a defining moment, a veritable title-clinching stop.

Signed for an undisclosed signing from Fulham in the summer of 2005, van der Sar has brought all the wisdom and know-how between the sticks that you would expect to find from a goalkeeper that is his nation’s most-capped player and a former UEFA Cup and Champions League winner with his former club Ajax in the earlier nineties.

A UEFA Cup and Champions League winner with the Dutch club in 1992 and 1995, he also won four league titles and three domestic cups with the Amsterdam outfit, before spending two seasons in Serie A with Juventus.

With the arrival of Gianlugi Buffon at the Stadio delle Alpi threatening his first-team chances, he made a £5 million switch to Fulham in 2001 at the outset of the Londoners’ Premiership adventure, but after four seasons at Craven

Cottage United came knocking.

Edwin’s move to Manchester was given the thumbs up by Schmeichel and in his first season at OT he started all but five of United’s 56 games, keeping an impressive 24 clean sheets, including five on the spin from his debut.

Van der Sar’s solid presence, agility and reliability have been a major plus to United this term, while his quick and inventive distribution aid the team’s speedy attacking style. Age may not be on his side, but experience counts, and he will be hoping to add to his Carling Cup and Premiership winners’ medals.

Mikael Silvestre is one of the most experienced members of Sir Alex Ferguson’s squad. In fact, at the end of the 2006/07 season, only four members of the current side had played for United more times.

This impressive record owes much to Mikael’s ability to play in two different positions: centre-back and left-back. As such, he’s survived the threat posed by new acquisitions and been invaluable to the manager when others have been suspended or injured. In the latter stages of 2005/06, he was the one patrolling Gabriel Heinze’s patch on the left flank while new-boy Nemanja Vidic partnered central lynchpin Rio Ferdinand.

The return to left-back, where he’d once been resident, enabled Silvestre to show off some of his attacking skills, including a pinpoint cross for Wayne Rooney’s goal against Arsenal in April 2006. He later described that 2-0 win for United as the best match of his career.

"I was up against Alexandr Hleb and Emmanuel Adebayor, but I achieved the objectives I set myself. I had a huge amount of determination. It was a benchmark game for me,” he said.

Silvestre then went to the 2006 World Cup, where he played in France's 2-0 win over Togo.
He started United's 2006/07 season in sparkling form, playing in the first six matches and scoring the opener in United's 2-1 victory at Vicarage Road. But an injury sustained against Arsenal in September saw countryman Patrice Evra step into his shoes and he never truly won back his spot in the team. It wasn't until November that Silvestre enjoyed his next spell of regular football, where top performances against Portsmouth, Everton and Aston Villa appeared to do wonders for his confidence.

Yet Silvestre played just four times over the next two months. February saw him get a few more games under his belt, including both

FA Cup ties against Reading, before a strong showing at Anfield guaranteed him a place when Lille visited Old Trafford in the Champions League. Disaster struck, however, when Silvestre landed awkwardly in injury time and dislocated his right shoulder.

It was a cruel blow for the French international and for Sir Alex, who could have done with Silvestre's defensive cover in the tense title run-in.

With excellent dribbling skills, impressive control and a vicious shot, Chris Eagles is rightly held in high esteem by many at Old Trafford.

The young right-sided midfielder caught the eye of fans as soon as he was given his first taste of first-team action - a 3-2 Carling Cup win at Leeds in 2003. Eagles was, at that time, a reserve team regular and in the following season, 2004/05, he helped the second string to collect a quadruple of trophies.

However, Eagles had to be patient for his Premiership breakthrough. With competition for senior midfield places forever fierce, Sir Alex

Ferguson sent the London-born youngster out on loan. He gained good experience of life below the top flight with Watford and Sheffield Wednesday and also had a stint on loan with Dutch Eridivisie side NEC Nijmegen in Holland.

After spending the best part of two years away from Old Trafford, Eagles started to forge his way into the first-team reckoning in the run-in to the 2006/07 title. The squad was hit by injuries but nevertheless, Eagles deserved his promotion as he demonstrated by firing home United's fourth goal - a superbly controlled curling effort - in a stunning second-half comeback at Everton on 28 April. It was a fine way to mark his Premiership debut, having come on as a sub for Solskjaer in the 86th minute.

Eagles then confirmed his status as a fully fledged member of the first-team squad with his first Premiership start on 9 May 2007 at Chelsea, where he enjoyed the experience of playing against his boyhood inspiration Joe Cole.

32. Carlos Tevez

Argentina striker Carlos Tevez is one of the game's most lethal finishers. A clinical striker of the ball, Tevez also has the confidence and skill to take on opponents, and is capable of playing as a deep-lying forward or lead striker.

At just 5ft 7in he's not the tallest centre forward to pull on a Red shirt, but his low centre of gravity aids acceleration and enables him to shield the ball from defenders and turn his marker with great speed. Tevez, once dubbed the "Argentine prophet for the 21st Century" by Diego Maradona, has also demonstrated a knack for curling free-kicks past some of the world's top goalkeepers.

Tevez is already idolised in South America after successful spells at Boca Juniors in his homeland, and Brazilian side Corinthians. Initially he had to win over fans in Brazil, but eventually he captained Corinthians to the title and became the first foreign player to collect the league's Player of the Year award in almost 20 years.

And he's no stranger to life in the Premier League, having spent the 2006/07 season with West Ham. After a slow start where he went 19 games without finding the net, Tevez scored the Hammers' second in a dramatic 4-3 loss to rivals Tottenham. He then embarked on a goalscoring spree that saw him net seven times in just 10 matches as West Ham battled to avoid relegation.

Perhaps his most memorable goal for West Ham arrived on the final day of the season, ironically against United at Old Trafford. Tevez showed relentless commitment to charge down a Wes Brown clearance, reach the looping ball ahead of Edwin van der Sar and calmly tuck home a half-volley and ensure the visitors' top-flight survival.

His impressive displays aren't limited to club football, either. He propelled Argentina to gold in the 2004 Olympic Games by netting an incredible eight times

and he's now a regular member of the senior squad. He notched in the 2006 World Cup against Serbia & Montenegro and then turned in a man-of-the-match performance against Holland in the final Group C clash.

Despite claims to the contrary, Sir Alex Ferguson believes Tevez and Wayne Rooney will link up wel for the Reds. "Tevez and Wayne can play in the same side together," he said. "I know people say they both like to drop deep, but I see Wayne's future up on his own. Tevez has shown when he plays right up he is a threat because he can beat a man. He is a real threat."

Lightning fast, driven and full of boundless energy, Martin is an absolute nightmare for opposition defenders.

Coveted by many Premiership clubs, Lee signed for United in December 2003. His first full season at Old Trafford brought six Reserve goals as he was quickly fast-tracked from the Under-18s.

An integral part of Ricky Sbragia's Quadruple-winning side in 2004/05, Martin's fine form continued into the 2005/06 season.

In January 2006 Lee was one of five United youngsters sent out on loan to Royal Antwerp, where he quickly caught the eye with his energetic

performances.

Although the Belgians’ bid for promotion ultimately failed, it wasn’t for lack of trying on the young winger’s part, and he was named the fans' Player of the Season for his efforts.

Sadly he was unable to have a similar impact in his next loan move, at Scottish giants Rangers. The Ibrox side's poor form, together with a niggling knee injury prevented Lee making his mark on the SPL.

Upon returning to England Lee attracted the interest of a host of clubs, with Championship side Stoke taking him on loan until the end of the 2006/07 season.
Martin turned in consistently fine form with the Potters, although Tony Pulis' side ultimately failed to reach the playoffs. Buoyed by the experience, Lee returned to Carrington a far more experienced player.

26. Phil Bardsley

Tough-tackling Phil Bardsley is proud to fly the local flag in United's cosmopolitan squad. He was born in Eccles and bred in Salford, not far from the football pitches at Littleton Road and The Cliff where United used to train.

His aspirations were fostered from an early age as he watched players like Bryan Robson and Roy Keane going through their paces. By the time Phil started his three-year scholarship in July 2001, the club had moved its training HQ to Carrington. There, all the scholars, not just the Salfordians, could be inspired by seeing the senior players at close quarters.

Bardsley completed his journey from the Salford playing fields to the senior United ranks with a League Cup trip to West Brom in December 2003. The Reds lost 2-0 but it was still a successful night on a personal level. Sir Alex described his performance at right-back as "outstanding." He can also play at centre-back, the position he occupied in his first season with United's youth team. In his second season, 2002/03, he helped the club to win the FA Youth Cup in a feat he described as "massive for a young footballer."

He is perhaps unfortunate to be competing with club skipper Gary Neville. However, a natural successor.
